Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust has announced plans for a new extension at The Westwood Academy, providing additional teaching space to support the school's growth.

The proposed new two-storey teaching block has been designed to provide modern and inclusive learning spaces for pupils. The extension is set to increase the school's capacity and will include nine new classrooms, group learning spaces, therapy and sensory rooms, staff facilities, accessible amenities and dedicated wellbeing spaces.

The new building will complement the existing school site while introducing a contemporary new entrance for the academy and additional parking. The extension has been designed with 'accessibility at its core,' including lift access to the first floor, accessible toilets and an Enhanced Resource Provision (ERP).

Deborah Talbot, Headteacher at The Westwood Academy, said: "The new building will make a real difference to everyday life at Westwood. Having more classrooms and dedicated spaces for learning, support and wellbeing will give us greater flexibility to meet the needs of our pupils. We look forward to seeing the plans become a reality and welcoming our pupils into these new spaces."

Sustainability has also been a key focus throughout the design process. The building will incorporate a range of environmentally responsible features including:

  • Air source heat pumps
  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) roof panels
  • Low-energy LED lighting
  • Intelligent ventilation and heating systems
  • Energy-efficient construction materials
  • Sustainable drainage and landscaping solutions

Hayden Abbott, CEO of Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust, said: "This extension represents an important investment in the future of the school. The new facilities will build upon the excellent work that has been achieved by staff and students in a school where everyone including those with special needs can achieve their full potential.

"The new building will also benefit everyone due to the additional classroom spaces and safer car parking and ensure that The Westwood Academy is well placed to continue delivering an excellent education for all, now and in the future.

"We are immensely grateful to Coventry Local Authority for their support and investment, which will make a significant difference."

Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Equalities at Coventry City Council, added: "This is fantastic news for pupils, families and staff at The Westwood Academy. The extension will provide additional school places, strengthen support for children with SEND, and create modern, high-quality learning environments where young people can thrive. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these new facilities will have on the school community for many years to come."

The Westwood Academy will be holding their Open Evening for Prospective year 7's on 8 October 2026 from 5 to 8pm.
