Balsall Common Primary School Academy's school councillors, representing Years 3 to Year 6, recently visited the Houses of Parliament and Number 10 Downing Street.

The visit provided an "invaluable opportunity" for these young pupils to "witness democracy in action" and engage directly with the people shaping the future of the country.

The day began with a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, where the students explored the Palace of Westminster and went inside the House of Lords, gaining insights into the legislative process and the history of British democracy.

The young councillors, and staff, were "captivated by the grandeur of Westminster Hall and the rich traditions that underpin parliamentary proceedings" the school said.

Following the tour, the group participated in a Q&A session with our local MP Saqib Bhatti.

The Conservative MP fielded questions on a range of topics from the challenges of decision-making to ways young people can contribute to their communities.

The highlight of the visit was then a trip to Number 10 Downing Street.

Manpreet Bains, Assistant Headteacher and school council lead, expressed pride in the school councillors, saying: "This visit was an incredible experience for our 24 school councillors.

"It not only deepened their understanding of how our country is governed but also encouraged them to think critically about the importance of leadership, representation, and active citizenship.

"They returned full of ideas and enthusiasm, ready to continue making a positive impact within our school and community."

The school also thanked Mr Bhatti for facilitating the experience.
