The second phase of the much-delayed Kenilworth to Leamington Cycleway (K2L) is set to get underway next month.

Work to build a cycle track along the east side of Kenilworth Road between Binswood Avenue and Northumberland Road in Leamington Spa will begin on Monday, September 4.

Construction will also begin on a signed cycle route along Beauchamp Road and Binswood Avenue, and new crossings for cyclists and pedestrians at Cloister Crofts, Lillington Avenue and Clarendon Avenue.

Following a recent consultation, double yellow lines will be painted along Kenilworth Road between Binswood Avenue and Gables House, just north of Northumberland Road.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) said this will improve visibility for access to properties, help with the flow of traffic and keep the pavements and cycle track clear of obstructions.

The council has not said how long the works - which will be carried out by Balfour Beatty Living Places - will take.

Construction of the first part of the route began in January.

WCC has warned there may be disruption and delays on local roads during the works.

"I am pleased to see that works are continuing on this important cycle route, enabling the completion of connections to Leamington town centre and local schools," said portfolio holder for transport Cllr Jan Matecki.

"The K2L Kenilworth to Leamington cycle route is a key part of Warwickshire County Council's ambitions to provide safe and attractive options for local journeys by bike.

"This supports our strategic priorities for providing better infrastructure, supporting healthy communities, mitigating climate change and meeting net zero commitments."

WCC recently announced it had secured £961,000 in funding for sections 1a (Leamington Town Centre to edge of town) and 1b (edge to town to Blackdown) of the K2L route.

With the budget approved in 2020, the 5km cycleway was given the green light fully by councillors in January 2021, but the council is yet to finish most of the design.

The project will also see a new pedestrian and cycle bridge built over the River Avon near Chesford Grange.
