A new name has been announced for the railway line which serves Kenilworth, following a public vote.

Local residents were given the chance to rename the Leamington Spa to Nuneaton route, which passes through Kenilworth Railway Station.

Previously known as the NUCKLE line, options for the link were sought by Heart of England Community Rail Partnership.

Over 200 ideas were put forward, with the list whittled down to three options: Coventry & Warwickshire Line, Elephant & Bear Line and Pioneer Line.

From there locals were asked to vote for their favourite, with 1,100 votes cast and Elephant & Bear Line coming out as the preferred choice.

The new name was due to be officially announced at a community day at Coventry Railway Station last month, however this was cancelled due to strike action.

Following the announcement, Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director for West Midlands Railway, said: “We were delighted to work with Heart of England CRP to select a new name for our Nuneaton to Leamington line which reflects the communities we serve along the route.

“Now the name has been selected we are looking at how we can best promote and celebrate the Elephant & Bear Line as we encourage more people to travel by train across the region.”

The new name refers to the two symbols of Coventry and Warwickshire.

It is the only railway line that only serves the two areas and the elephant and bear have cultural and historical significance along the line.
