Today, local residents have been ditching their cars for bikes as part of National Cycle to Work Day.

Organised by Cyclescheme, it is the UK's biggest cycling commuting event and has been running for 11 years.

The day aims to encourage people all around the country to get on their bikes and get into work one of the best ways possible – on two wheels.

This morning (August 3), local councillors and residents joined together for a spin around the town before heading for coffee and cake to mark the occasion.

"Thank you for a fabulous start to the day, hopefully do it again next year," said Cllr Alison Insley.

"In the meantime, keep cycling, keep smiling and enjoy the ride.

"Well done to everyone across the county and country that took part in National Cycle to Work Day!"

The nationwide event comes just days after a new safe cycle to school scheme was launched in Kenilworth.

Last week local parents, pupils and volunteers joined together for the first trips of 'Bike Gang' from St John's to Kenilworth School.

The initiative has been launched to enable the children to gain confidence in cycling to school, to meet friends to cycle with, and to involve their parents to support and encourage them too.
