A proposal for a large block of flats in a Solihull village has been lodged with planners.

Applicants TR Partnership Homes Ltd and Citizen Housing Group Ltd want to build a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom affordable units on the site of the former Royal British Legion Club in Balsall Common.

The application, submitted to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) last month, proposes to demolish the existing buildings on the site of 316 Station Road to make way for a three storey, 28-unit apartment building.

A planning statement included in the application says: "The site comprises a brownfield site of approximately 0.24 hectares located on the eastern side of Station Road.

"The site is located within the green belt, however, is a previously developed plot and sits within a row of developed plots along Station Road.

"The proposal seeks to deliver 28 dwellings, comprising a mix of 16 one-bed and 12 two-bed units, and the intention is to deliver the scheme as entirely affordable housing.

"The proposal represents sustainable, high-quality development."

The applicants point out that the council's local plan identifies that the authority will resist the loss of community and social infrastructure unless it can be demonstrated it can no longer continue for commercial or operational reasons.

It is argued in the statement this can be demonstrated in this case.

The applicants also highlight the lack of affordable housing in the borough.

"The application should be approved without delay," the conclusion in the statement says.

Included in the application are proposed floor plans and images of how the block of flats could potentially look.

A consultation is now underway with a closing date for submissions of August 26.
