An informal public consultation is set to be held over plans to install a 'memorial post box' at a Kenilworth cemetery.

Kenilworth Town Council has agreed to spend £100 on buying the box, which one councillor explained can be useful for some people as they grieve.

The council will gather feedback from residents via social media before the box will be installed at Oaks Road Cemetery.

Speaking at the most recent council meeting, Cllr Richard Dickson said: "The purpose of the post box is to enable people - as part of the bereavement process which can go on for years - to send a message to somebody who has departed, to communicate with them. It is said by people who use such things, it helps them grieve.

"It may be a message of simply regret that 'I am missing you', it may be a message of anger, that is also part of the grieving process."

As some councillors questioned the demand for the post box, Cllr Dickson explained they are used at other cemeteries elsewhere in the country and are often used to send letters on birthdays, Christmas and anniversaries relating to the deceased person.

He continued: "It builds on something that the district council has done at Oakley Wood where, in the new children's memorial garden, they have put a post box of a sort where children can go and send a message to a departed parent, or where a parent can go and send a message to a lost child."

Just one councillor abstained in the vote to buy the post box.

Members agreed to purchase it before the consultation to avoid missing out, as other plans could have cost closer to £1,400.

The town council will also speak to officers at Warwick District Council - which manages the cemetery - before plans progress further.
