A Liberal Democrat campaign to create safe cycling routes in and around Kenilworth, that began in 1986, has helped to achieve a new milestone when Warwickshire County Council's Cabinet meeting on 28 January approved funding for K2L – a new cycling route linking Kenilworth and Leamington.

Cllr Andrew Milton (Liberal Democrat St John's), a Kenilworth cycling advocate, said: "Kenilworth is likely to witness an increase in congestion as new developments and HS2 construction gather pace. K2L is an integral part of our desire to see a truly integrated active transport strategy that improves safety and wellbeing plus reducing pollution and congestion.

"Liberal Democrats' campaign to create K2L first received support from the County Council back in 2006. This succeeded thanks to the work of John Whitehouse, who was a Kenilworth Liberal Democrat county councillor at that time.

"In recent years we've campaigned hard alongside people in the local community for the Kenilworth-Leamington cycle route to become reality and we welcome the cross party support for our initiative and hope that local residents will be able to benefit as soon as possible."

The County Council Cabinet meeting authorised the Council's Strategic Directors to take 'all steps' to implement the K2L scheme by the end of 2023. Speaking as a local Kenilworth resident at the Cabinet meeting, Richard Dickson welcomed the proposal saying 'from today the time for yet more delay, procrastination and uncertainty is over'.
