Liberal Democrat councillors have raised concerns about the lack of decision on community use arrangements for the new Kenilworth School.

Keys to the £48 million school on Glasshouse Lane were handed over to Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust (KMAT) in July, ahead of students being welcomed for the first time on September 6.

Planning permission for the 2,200-place facility was granted by Warwick District Council (WDC) in September 2019, with construction getting underway in May 2021.

The current school sites on Leyes Lane and Rouncil Lane are set to be turned into houses once they have been vacated.

But local Lib Dems are now asking what will happen to the many local community groups with rely on the school sites to meet - with the community use agreement for the new school still yet to be signed off by WDC.

A draft agreement was published in June but is yet to be signed off as discussions with KMAT continue.

At last week's district council meeting concerns were raised by local Lib Dems about the lack of decision for the community use, and the travel plan for the school which was first submitted by Ove Arup Consultants on behalf of the school in May 2023.

As well as the district council still needing to agree both items, the travel plan needs also to be agreed by Warwickshire County Council and the community use agreement needs agreement from Sport England.

As a result of the concerns raised, councillors have been assured that council staff are working very closely with the school and its consultants to ensure that the deadlines are understood before the new facilities are open.
