Town councillors have called for the flood warning signs in Kenilworth to be repaired following the "carnage" of the past few months.

Following a number of spells of heavy rainfall, the ford near Kenilworth Castle has been impassable on a number of occasions so far this year.

And while local police have on occasion placed road closure signs along Castle Road to stop motorists, councillors have said the electric warning signs on Warwick Road and at the junction with Castle Hill have not been working properly.

"When the ford floods, the traffic sign on the high street goes berserk," Cllr Alan Chalmers told last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting.

"It is green for about four seconds before going red again.

"It is something we can ask the county council about to have a look at that.

"When it is not flooded it is fine, but when it is flooded, it is carnage."

There have been several incidents of motorists getting stuck in the ford over the past weeks.

And with Odibourne Allotments having also flooded five times since October, the council said it also wants to take a more proactive approach to help the town deal with such incidents.

"We report on what has happened. But as Kenilworth is very much affected, I think we should be a bit more proactive," said Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Alix Dearing.

"I certainly would be happy to put some words together [to Warwick District Council]."

In response, Cllr James Kennedy added: "Can I suggest you have a discussion with the flood reporting group who are based at Northvale Close which is the most sensitive part of the Finham Brook catchment area, where the flooding occurred recently.

"They have access to one or two experts, and they are very much aware of the recent flooding."

In December 2022 the town council agreed to spend £35,000 on a new natural flood defence project specifically hoping to reduce the threat of flooding at houses, at the Castle Road and Rouncil Lane fords, and Odibourne Allotments.

Run by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with Finham Brook Flood Action Group, a recent update on the scheme showed the "positive progress" that had been made.
