With one in four people in England experiencing a mental health problem of some kind each year and one in six people reported to be experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week the need for 'talking therapies' at a local level has never been greater.

Recently launched, ROOM Psychotherapy, aims to provide one to one support for individuals and their mental health in Kenilworth.

Led by Integrative Psychotherapist Helen Davies, ROOM is a space to acknowledge and work through challenges, whatever they may be, providing a modern approach to mental health.

Helen left her job in PR and communications after 20 years to pursue a new career where she could directly support other people.

She trained in a Holistic Phenomenological Integrative (HPI) approach at the University of Warwick and has working in the charity sector for the past few years.

And in January 2023 she launched ROOM Psychotherapy to offer in person and online support.

"I worked in PR and marketing for the best part of 20 years and I really enjoyed the creativity and the relationality of it – putting real people at the centre of my work was always a part I enjoyed," Helen told Nub News.

"I was on life's treadmill in some ways - education, get a job, start a family.

"I was 'doing well' by some standards, but a series of life events made me stop and reassess what I wanted to be in the world, what I wanted to be doing and what my values were.

"I just wanted to be part of a movement towards change, towards health and towards greater care. Too often people reach crisis point before considering their mental health and yet it's an integral part of healthy living."

Helen's integrative training means she brings a range of approaches to her work and can support people experiencing a variety of issues.

While her specialist interests include parental mental health, work-related stress and life transitions, she is available to support people with whatever challenges they are currently facing.

"I aim to be able to meet whatever needs are there to be met," she added.

"Whether it is trauma, dealing with anxiety or depression, or someone who needs support managing a relationship or adjusting to life changes - which is something we all go through and often brush over and don't always mark or notice the impact they have on us.

"ROOM is a space to work through these experiences, improve clarity, reduce symptoms and support personal growth."

A month into running her own business, Helen has already received lots of positive feedback and is eager to spread the message that looking after our mental health is as important as our physical well being.

And despite having taken the plunge to completely change her career, she said she had no regrets at all.

"It was challenging, leaving behind safety and what you know, so it did feel like I was stepping away from that safety and security.

"But I was really excited about the potential to change and be part of change.

"I am really glad I did that, it's early stages and hasn't been without hard work, but I really feel privileged to do this job now."
