The first 70 Kenilworth residents to buy a tree from a local garden centre for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee will be offered a £5 discount thanks to the town council.

Organised by the Woodland Trust, the Queen's Green Canopy will see thousands of trees planted across the UK to celebrate 70 years of the Queen's reign.

Thanks to Kenilworth Town Council's climate roadmap group, 70 local residents will be able to purchase a discounted tree for the event from Smith's Garden Centre in Baginton.

The council also intends to map the new trees planted by individuals and community groups, and create a display of photographs.

There are a variety of trees available to the public and the Woodland Trust suggests crab apple, cherry, rowan, hazel and hawthorn and a variety of others, but the choice is yours.

Care should be taken in the siting of these trees with regards their eventual size. If the trees are bare-rooted whips they will need to be staked, protected from grazing animals, and regularly watered.

Trees planted by schools and community groups, which can be set up for this purpose, can be applied for directly from the Woodland Trust and are free.
