A Kenilworth therapy business has launched a new initiative looking to support new mums in the local area.

Have you heard of matrescence? If not, you're not alone.

Matrescence was coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s to describe the major physical, social, psychological and spiritual transitions individuals experience when they become mothers.

Currently very little acknowledges or addresses these experiences which can leave new mothers feeling shocked and unprepared, on top of the everyday challenges of new motherhood.

'Project Matrescence' is a collaboration between Room Psychotherapy and The Parenting Project aiming to support new mothers navigate their transition to and through early motherhood.

Project Matrescence is a six-week psychotherapist-led circle providing a space for new mums (six to 12 months postpartum) to connect with self and with other mums.

First time mums are invited to creatively explore the real impact of becoming a mother on identity, relationships and emotions in a safe, small group environment.

Through sharing experiences with others, without judgement, and creative exploration which may include clay work, genograms and poetry, participants can expect to increase awareness of their individual matrescence experience, and understand how it impacts them and their relationships.

Helen Davies, UKCP accredited Psychotherapist and Project Matrescence co-ordinator said: "Becoming a mother (matrescence) is a unique time of change in a person's life and yet it's an experience rarely considered from a mother's perspective.

"We know that significant stress, anxiety and depression are present in at least 27 per cent of all new mothers (NHS England, 2024).

"This tells us that the psychological impact of becoming a mum is as challenging and impactful as the physical one, and yet it is often overlooked.

"The research tells us that where mothers are able to talk openly about their mental health without fear of stigma, post-partum distress can be significantly reduced. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment where mothers may feel respected and listened to.

"Through sharing psychoeducation and peer-to-peer experiences, the group aims to empower mothers to better understand their own experiences and acquire stress management tools and skills to better support them and their families."

Project Matrescence is fully funded by The Parenting Project and therefore free for participants.

It is a closed group, and numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 12, therefore pre-booking is essential and subject to an initial consultation with the group facilitator.
