The Main Hall at Kenilworth School was buzzing this past week—alive with nerves, excitement, and the unmistakable energy of young minds ready to spar.

Students from 17 schools across Coventry and Warwickshire gathered for the qualification rounds of The KMAT Great Debate—a fierce, fast-paced competition that has quickly become one of the most thrilling events on the academic calendar.

From the moment they arrived, the atmosphere was electric. Key Stage 3 students clustered in groups, whispering last-minute strategies, rehearsing carefully honed arguments, and bracing themselves for the unknown: Which topics would be pulled?

Which side of the motion would they have to defend? And—most daunting of all—who would be sitting across the table, ready to challenge them?

The tension only built as the rounds progressed.

With Key Stage 5 judges presiding, Year 11 students stepping in as trusted supporters, and peers cheering from the sidelines, the stage was set for high drama.

After two weeks of preparation, the relief and adrenaline were palpable as the first words of debate rang out across the hall.

Teachers and staff paced the room with pride, watching their students rise to the occasion, while the judges kept sharp eyes out for "Standout Debaters"—those individuals who dazzled with confidence, quick thinking, and razor-sharp delivery.

But, it would be the fate of a few to make it through to the next round.

Out of 17 ambitious schools, only 10 would advance to the grand final, joining host Kenilworth and Westwood. The big question: who would make the cut?

And here they are—the ten schools who fought their way to the top, ranked by their scores in the qualifiers:

  • Bishop Ullathorne
  • Hartshill Academy
  • Finham Park
  • Warwick School
  • Blue Coat CofE School
  • Arnold Lodge School
  • The Kingsley School
  • Polesworth School
  • The Avon Valley School
  • Kineton High School

The finalists will return to face the ultimate challenge—and commiserations to those who missed out this time.

If the qualifiers are anything to go by, the final promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
