Kenilworth rapist up for early release from prison
By James Smith 18th Jun 2026
A Kenilworth man who raped and sexually assaulted a teenager in Coventry more than a decade ago could be released after just four-and-a-half years behind bars.
The Ministry of Justice has confirmed to The Times that Simon Tyler will be eligible for release from prison in 2028.
Tyler was sentenced in November 2024 after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in Coventry and elsewhere in the country.
The offences were investigated by West Midlands Police officers after the girl, now an adult, came forward to tell her story.
She was 14 at the time of the offences.
Tyler was identified and arrested in 2022.
He was was originally jailed for nine years and will be on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.
But under government plans to cut prison sentences to free up spaces in prison, he may be able to get out earlier than planned.
Previously, he would not have been eligible for parole until 2030 after he had served two thirds of his sentence.
The Times reported comments from his victim who said it was "such an insult" and a "kick in the teeth" that he may not serve more of his sentence.
