Kenilworth pub's fresh bid for makeover

A Kenilworth pub has submitted a fresh application in its bid to give the front of the building a makeover.
Last year The Lion on Warwick Road was given advertising consent by Warwick District Council (WDC) for a series of new signs, and a repaint - although planners did only approve part of the application, taking issue with proposed "excessive" and "harmful" modern signs.
However, the scheme did not go ahead as the local authority refused permission for a separate listed building application for the grade II listed building. This application was refused for the same issues with the modern sign designs.
As such, pub owner Greene King has now submitted a fresh application to WDC, taking on the feedback from last year.
"Due to it not being possible to issue a split decision on a listed building consent, the council had to refuse listed building consent on account of one sign being unacceptable despite the other signs being considered acceptable," the application explained.
"This application seeks to address the reason for the refusal of listed building consent by omitting from the scheme the painted gable sign that was considered unacceptable and resulted in the refusal of listed building consent."

Plans show six new signs and associated lighting would be installed at The Lion, with designs "identical" to those given advertisement consent last year.
The application continued: "In consideration of the design, finish and amount, the proposed new and replacement signage and external lighting is assessed to have a neutral impact upon the significance of the building with the key features of special interest conserved.
"The works whilst modest support trade at the premises and thus support the viability of the business and the retention of the listing building in its existing and long-established use."
