Kenilworth fire crews were called to barn fire near Wellesbourne on what was an "exceptionally busy day" yesterday (July 18).

Firefighters from seven stations were called to tackle the blaze on Kineton Road, Walton, the smoke from which could be seen from miles away.

The barn was "well alight" when crews arrived and was "endangering neighbouring woodland" according to Wellesbourne Fire Station.

Crews managed to get the fire under control and have remained on site to allow the straw inside the barn to burn out.

A Wellesbourne Fire Station spokesperson said: "Crews worked hard in the hot conditions to gain control and stop the fire spreading. At its height there were five appliances and two water bowsers in attendance.

"Crews will likely be in attendance most of today to allow the straw to burn itself out."

Elsewhere yesterday Kenilworth's water carrier was also called to a hedge fire in Great Packington and a tractor fire which had spread to a field and trees in Great Wolford.

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson has also called on residents to look after themselves properly during the heatwave.

They said: "We are extremely busy at the moment dealing with several large incidents across the county.

"Please help us by keeping yourself safe in the heat and follow fire safety advice to help protect our environment."
