Kenilworth Firefighter retires today after 41 years of service

By James Smith 5th Aug 2021

Kenilworth Firefighter Malcolm Gunter will retire today after 41 years of service as an on-call firefighter.

Malcolm has been a firefighter locally since 1979; after joining Warwick County Fire Brigade as an 18 year old he was posted to Kenilworth.

During his 41 years service, Malcom has attended thousands of calls, seen the station in Kenilworth move from Upper Rosemary Hill to its current location on School Lane, as well as gone through proposed closures to the local station.

Most significantly Malcolm and his colleagues received a commendation in July 1994. The accolade came after Kenilworth firefighters had to resuscitate two people who were struck by lightning in Abbey Fields.

As the then longest-serving firefighter in Warwickshire in 2017, he was invited to the Queen's Garden Party to recognise his achievements.

Kenilworth Fire Station have said on Facebook "he always takes new recruits under his wing and pass on his knowledge.

"He will be greatly missed by all of the firefighters at Kenilworth Fire Station and he is leaving a big gap to fill!"

Congratulations must be passed on to Malcolm for a lifetime of dedicated service, as well as best wishes for his retirement.
