Kenilworth fire crews were called to a large barn fire at a farm in Whatcote shortly after midnight on Sunday morning.

Two barns containing around 400 tonnes of hay were involved in the blaze, along with vehicles and machinery.

Firefighters from Kenilworth, Wellesbourne and Fenny Compton joined their Stratford colleagues at the scene, but two more crews from Leamington and Oxfordshire were quickly called to help tackle the fire.

Kenilworth's water carrier was needed because the blaze was far away from the nearest water hydrant.

The rest of the town's crew went to Shipston-on-Stour Fire Station to join the on-call team there.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews remained on site for the rest of the day.

A Kenilworth Fire Station spokesperson said: "At 00:15am our Water Carrier was mobilised to proceed with crews from Wellesbourne, Stratford and Fenny Compton to reports of a large barn fire in Whatcote.

"Upon the arrival of the first crew from Stratford. they located two barns containing around 400 tonnes of hay, numerous vehicles and machinery involved in fire, an assistance message was immediately passed requesting two further crews. Crews from Leamington and Oxfordshire proceeded.

"Our Water Carrier crew set up our large water dam and shuttled water to the fire ground due to the long distance from the nearest hydrant.

"Meanwhile the remaining Kenilworth crew were instructed to proceed to Shipston-on-Stour Fire Station and combine with their on-call crew to make a fully crewed fire engine.

"The Water Carrier crew returned just after 6am and the standby crew around 5am."
