Kenilworth close to becoming a 'toilet twinned' town
Kenilworth is on the verge of becoming a 'toilet twinned' town after a campaign was launched by Kenilworth Soroptimists earlier this year
Run by the Toilet Twinning charity, the scheme is encouraging towns and villages across the UK to apply for the status in a bid to provide clean sanitation around the globe.
As well as applying for toilet twinned status, individuals can pay £60 to twin their toilet, with the money going to fund the construction of a much-needed basic toilet in deprived communities elsewhere in the world.
Launched locally in September, Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Sam Louden-Cooke has been supporting the Kenilworth campaign and organisers have said: "We're delighted to report that we are well on the way to achieving this."
Kenilworth Allotments already had its toilet twinned but the Kenilworth Centre, Leyes Lane Pharmacy, Kenilworth Books and Curves have also all now been certified as twinned toilets.
Kenilworth Lions are also sponsoring an entire toilet block in Zambia and Kenilworth Methodist Church has six twinned already.
Others in the pipeline include Debbie Thomas Physiotherapy and Kenilworth Nursery School.
Sir Jeremy Wright MP has also agreed to sponsor the campaign.
Organisers added: "So, let's celebrate International Toilet Twinning Day 19 November with as many 'loo' based puns as possible.
"Kenilworth may not have a toilet twinned with Timbuktu, but so far, we have got them in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Uganda, and Zambia.
"Our Christmas tree complete with 'throne' will conveniently be on public display at the festival in St Nicholas's Church from 24 to 27 November.
"If you've got your toilet twinned do let Kenilworth Soroptimists know. We'll add you to our bog count!"
