The annual Boxing Day duck race in Abbey Fields has been postponed, organisers have today (November 15) announced.

Run by Kenilworth Lions, the winter event raises money for a number of local causes.

But a post on the club's social media pages today said the race has been postponed due the demolition and reconstruction of the town's leisure centre.

It said: "It is with regret that we announced that the Kenilworth Lions Duck Race planned for Boxing Day 2022 has been postponed.

"Due to the swimming pool development at Abbey Fields our risk assessment lead us to believe it is not currently possible to hold a duck race as we cannot assure the comfort and safety of the public attending this popular event.

"This was not an easy decision to take as providing entertainment while raising funds for the Kenilworth community is our prime aim."

Work on the Abbey Fields leisure project started last month, and councillors are set to debate the rising costs of the development later this year.

The duck race was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic and last year was pushed back to New Year's Day after the river was deemed unsafe.

Kenilworth Lions has not given a date for the next instalment.

It will however bring its popular Carols at the Castle event back on December 17.
