Kenilworth 'knit and natter' group making blankets and scarves to send to Middle East
A Kenilworth 'knit and natter' group has been making blankets, scarves and hats to send to vulnerable people in Syria and Gaza over the winter.
Organised by Compassionate Kenilworth, the group meets on alternate Tuesday afternoons (4.30pm to 6pm) at Kenilworth Senior Citizens Club, with new members welcome.
Run by Helen's Wool & Cotton Crafts, the knit and natter group is also one of a number of free community events organised by Compassionate Kenilworth, the new charity formed from the Covid-19 Support Kenilworth group.
Events organised by Compassionate Kenilworth are designed to encourage residents to leave their homes in a safe and enjoyable way after the last 18 months of social restrictions.
As advertised in our What's On section, the knit and natter group is looking for new members, with newbies to knitting particularly encouraged.
The first meeting was held in September and more dates are scheduled for October 12 and 26.
As well as knitting blankets and scarves to send to the middle east, attendees are also welcome to bring their own knitting to finish, or to come and learn for the first time.
Speaking to Kenilworth Nub News organiser Helen Wilkes, of Helen's Wool & Cotton Crafts, said the group was serving two very important purposes in supporting residents locally as well as those abroad.
"Seeing the constant news and pictures of those out in Syria and Gaza, who have lost their homes, jobs, careers and family, a blanket, hat or scarf is just something to help keep them warm and give them hope while they are living in tents."
Helen also said that the group was still looking for new members to come and join.
"Knitting squares is a good way to learn how to knit, and less daunting than a garment for beginners, with the end in mind that the squares can be put together with others into a blanket, creating a community made item, going to a community in need."
As well as the knit and natter group, Compassionate Kenilworth is also hosting free weekly coffee mornings with the help of WRCC's 'Chattybus'. Breathing techniques workshops and arts and crafts sessions are also available.
Speaking on the importance of such events the charity's chair Pauline Hayward added: "Compassionate Kenilworth takes over from the Covid-19 Support Group's work. The focus is now to encourage, motivate and provide the opportunity for people to go out.
"So many have become scared, nervous, and need a little bit of motivation and help in getting out and reconnecting with the world and reconnecting with other people."
Anybody interested in joining the knitting group or arts and craft sessions can call 01926 919340 on weekdays to book a slot or simply to find out more.
