'Insufficient' power at Kenilworth's Abbey Fields museum could be rectified if plans are approved.

Kier Construction Ltd has submitted a planning application to Warwick District Council (WDC) to install a "more reliable power supply" to the grade I listed barn in the town centre park.

The barn houses the museum of the Augustinian abbey's history.

The application - which WDC has actually instructed Kier to submit - could see the power taken off the new leisure centre to the museum.

"The existing underground electrical cable supplying power to the barn runs through the abbey complex, but has provided only intermittent energy (such as lighting but not heating)," the application said.

"The replacement cable has been designed to re-use the existing trench as far as possible, with a change to how it enters the building."

Other options were considered for the works but not deemed feasible.

"This approach minimises harm to the listed building, removes the unsightly and hazardous existing external cable, and enhances the aesthetic appreciation of the structure," the application continued.
