HS2 works are anticipated to experience a delay of at least another two years.

The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, is expected to announce today that there is "no reasonable way to deliver the railway line on schedule and within budget."

However, it is not anticipated that she will specify when the route will officially commence operation or when the work is expected to be completed.

Alexander is also set to outline the findings of two reviews into HS2.

One of these will include the "litany of failure" leading to delays in the project's completion and rising costs.

The project was approved in 2012, with initial forecasts estimating a cost of £33 billion and operational commencement by 2026.

Now, the completion of HS2 is expected to extend beyond 2033.

In response to the news, Cllr Richard Dickon, spokesperson on HS2 issues for Warwickshire County Council, Liberal Democrats, has issued a statement.

Cllr Dickson said: "For those of us with daily lived experience of HS2 in Warwickshire, today's statement will come as no surprise.

"The government needs first to change the culture of HS2.

"This will help ensure costs are better controlled, reduce inconvenience to residents and communities as a priority, meet deadlines, and minimise any further environmental impact."
