Designs for a kilometre-long HS2 cutting on the edge of Kenilworth have been put forward to the district council for approval.

The high speed rail developer has asked for sign off on the plans for Kenilworth Cutting, which will run from the A429 Kenilworth Road to Dalehouse Lane.

Plans submitted at the end of August show the cutting will be as much as 11.4m deep in places.

Earth will be built up on the side of the cutting in places to provide a natural sound barrier as well as "visual screening and landscape integration of the scheme".

Concrete noise barriers up to three metres high will be built along other sections of the cutting.

This as well as security fencing running along its length.

The designs submitted last month are different to what was originally planned in the area.

The application explained: "A key challenge during the design of this railway cutting has been adapting the engineering earthworks and adjacent structures to a change which was made to the HS2 rail alignment.

"During an alignment opportunity SIFT appraisal in 2019, the resultant vertical rail alignment changes were reviewed in relation to the design option which included a retaining wall and found that the reduced cutting depths provided an opportunity to reject the retaining wall solution in favour of extending Kenilworth Cutting and removing the cast in-situ concrete structure elements.

"This has reduced the construction cost of this asset, and also its carbon footprint."

The HS2 Act decrees the cutting will be created, with the council only able to comment on certain elements of its design.

Plans for the 850m Roughknowles Wood Cutting, the 530m Bockenden Cutting, the 750m cutting to the west of Kenilworth Road and a 1.3km cutting to the east of Dalehouse Lane have already been approved.
