How can you mark Remembrance Sunday in Kenilworth this year?

As with so many things in 2020, arrangements for Remembrance Sunday in Kenilworth this weekend (November 8) are having to adapt to new restrictions.

Instead of the usual community event which would see the public as well as local religious groups, organisations, and children's groups convene around the war memorial in Abbey Fields, this year's event will take place virtually.

Residents are being asked to stay in their homes and watch the service via a video link, that is being provided by Kenilworth Town Council.

This year wreaths will be laid on behalf of organisations, there will be no hymns, nor a parade. Instead there will be a shortened service and a two-minute silence, attended only be a small handful of invited individuals.

Whilst attendance is being kept to a minimum, Abbey Hill will still be closed to traffic for safety.

Organisers have said "The intention is still to hold the two-minute silence and lay wreaths in a shortened service at the War Memorial.

"However public safety in the current Covid situation is paramount. Outdoor Remembrance Services are only allowed, provided numbers involved are kept to a minimum.

"We therefore request that no representatives of organisations or the general public attend the War Memorial on Sunday morning."

Chairman of the Kenilworth branch of the Royal British Legion, George Illingworth, said "we will sadly be having a shortened service this year, no parade, and no involvement of the local youth organisations. We want to encourage people to commemorate in their homes and watch the service online."

The new arrangements in full:

  • Attendance must be minimised to meet the lockdown conditions.
  • Representatives of organisations should not attend.
  • Wreaths will be laid by a small team on behalf of organisations.
  • There will be no parades or march past.
  • There will be no involvement of the massed youth organisations.
  • There will be no hymns or band.
  • There will be no extra disabled seating.
  • The normal bucket collection for the Poppy Appeal will not happen.
  • There will be no reception back at the Copper House Club.
  • The general public are asked not to attend.

If you would like to watch the Remembrance Sunday service this weekend, you can do so by watching the live broadcasts on the Town Council's YouTube account, or on Facebook.

The broadcast will begin at 10.30am.

The Kenilworth Branch of the Royal British Legion have also had three 'pop-up poppy shops' in the town collecting donations and selling poppies.

As the Poppy Appeal continues to adapt to the current situation, they have also set up a Just Giving page which you can now donate through.
