A World War Two bomb was safely detonated in Cubbington this afternoon (May 19), after it was uncovered by HS2 workers.

The device was discovered near Cubbington Woods, Rugby Road yesterday and was dealt with by a Military Explosives Ordnance Disposal team today.

A small number of homes were evacuated prior to the detonation, while police restricted access to the site.

A Kenilworth and Warwick Rural Police spokesperson said: "You may have heard a loud bang in Cubbington village this afternoon.

"Military Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) carried out a controlled detonation on an unexploded WWII bomb that was located in the vicinity of Cubbington Woods.

"We would like to thank our colleagues from Leamington Police and response officers who ensured the area was kept clear and members of the public remained safe. Thanks also to the British Army for your service.

"Key community members were informed about what was going on in Cubbington. Thank you for reassuring residents and keeping your community safe."

HS2 is planning to create a 2km cutting in Cubbington which would see Rugby Road realigned, with a new road overbridge built.
