Holiday pods may have to be removed after councillors refuse retrospective application
Two holiday 'pods' may have to be removed from a field in Burton Green after councillors agreed they were inappropriate use of the green belt.
A retrospective planning application for the two iglus on a parcel of land off Hob Lane was discussed by Warwick District Council's (WDC) planning committee last week, with members siding with officers that the scheme should be thrown out.
A council report ahead of the meeting said the timber-clad glamping units were "harmful by reason of inappropriateness and harm to openness," and should not be given the go-ahead.
Applicant Nikki Scarlett argued the pods, which have already been installed, would not cause any damage to the green belt, and said it was important the scheme be given support by councillors.
"My plans sit modestly and discreetly and pose no threat to the area," she told the committee.
"I am here because multiple people have shown their support, and with your support I can continue to benefit the economic growth of the area, create greater employment and be part of a community which embraces and supports over."
Over 40 notices of support had been submitted to the application, but all were from people living outside the district.
The application would also have seen a cabin removed and a disused tennis court turned into a meadow.
An application for a single, bigger holiday cabin on the site was refused last year.
But councillors still said the development was inappropriate and did not show any justification for developing in the green belt.
"I am not sure this constitutes anything exceptional in respect to the green belt conditions, so I am reluctant to support," said Cllr Chris King.
