Historic hedge could be restored in Abbey Fields

A historic hedge could be restored at Kenilworth's Abbey Fields.
Friends of Abbey Fields (FOAF) is working on a project to replant a 'native hedge' which until the 1950's ran from Abbey Hill to Finham Brook.
The group has been working on the project for some time, and revealed in a report to Kenilworth Town Council that it has been approached by the Warwickshire branch of The Campaign to Protect Rural England which is looking to increase hedgerows nationwide.
"A new hedge to be planted along the line of the ancient hedgerow running north from near Holmes Avenue towards the Finham Brook," the report explained.
"It would be 60m long.
"The two existing trees would be integral to the hedgerow.
"The plants would be spaced typically at four to five per metre."
FOAF says it hopes to get the planting underway in spring 2026 with the hedgerow to create a "wildlife habitat and corridor".
A temporary fence would be installed to protect the hedgerow for three to five years.
Cllr James Kennedy said at the most recent Kenilworth Town Council meeting: "I think it is an excellent proposal.
"I think it is useful for us to note that and the further development of biodiversity enhancing our green spaces."
