Looking after the currently broken clock in the centre of Kenilworth, and the water feature at Abbey End may soon become the responsibility of the town council.

Councillors said it is a "top priority" to try and find a fix for the clock tower feature which has now been out of action for over a year.

Currently managed by Warwick District Council (WDC), the tower and the water feature are among a list of responsibilities Kenilworth Town Council is looking to potentially take over from the local authority.

A letter to the town council from a local resident this week called for urgency on fixing the two issues.

"The clock tower and the globe water feature at Abbey End are two major features in the town centre and are maintained under contracts managed by the district council," it said.

"The clock has spent nearly a year out of order and to a lesser extent the globe has also spent a large period not working.

"Instead of being a benefit to the street scene, they are - by being out of service - more to its detriment, which is a shame.

"Would the town council please consider at least seeking to undertake the management of those contracts, on behalf of the district, to ensure the constant monitoring of the maintenance of these features, so they are kept in working order in the future and thus improve the town centre street scene?"

The town council has been exploring taking on more responsibility from its county and district counterparts for nearly two years now, with a meeting due to take place with WDC on the topic later this month.

The meeting has already been cancelled twice.

But town council leader Cllr James Kennedy said at this week's meeting, resolving the issues around the clock remains "top of the list".

"I think all of us on the council are as frustrated as he is that the clock doesn't work," he said.

"So far WDC has not been able to fix it."

He added: "The management of the clock tower and the water feature will remain a top priority."
