Campaigners have launched a fresh petition calling for the district council to reconsider its plans for Kenilworth's new swimming pools.

The Kenilworth Lido Campaign previously had over 1,000 signatures on a petition asking for outdoor swimming to be preserved in the town.

While the efforts did not prevent the old lido from being removed, campaigners have launched a second bid to get Warwick District Council (WDC) to reconsider its "outdated, and unworkable" designs.

"Construction has been halted due to archaeological finds on the proposed site and the current plans have had to be significantly re-designed which will undoubtedly add to the spiralling costs and ongoing delays in this project," the latest petition said.

"If you do not want Warwick District Council pouring more of our money into the existing outdated, and unworkable plan please support our request that WDC councillors call for a complete halt to the current Kenilworth Leisure project and carry out a full and transparent cross-party review of all the options."

The group said the current plans for Abbey Fields are "very far" from the best option.

Campaigners say other sites in town should be restored, with a more energy-efficient design including outdoor swimming considered.

WDC recently revealed that Historic England has given approval for revised plans for the new swimming pools in Abbey Fields.

The new designs - which will still need to be signed off by councillors - will raise the level of the new leisure centre so it sits over the historic remains uncovered in the park.

"We know that it is important to keep the public fully informed about progress on this redevelopment and are in discussion with Kenilworth Town Council about holding a public meeting for residents at the earliest opportunity," said portfolio holder for safer communities, leisure and environment Cllr Jim Sinnott last month.

"The council understands the frustration of local people about the delays and current lack of swimming provision but remains committed to providing the town of Kenilworth with a new facility they can be proud of.

"At this stage we would like to thank our contractors AR Demolition for their unwavering dedication and professionalism throughout our current challenges and also the help and advice of the team at Archaeology Warwickshire."
