Free castle passes for Kenilworth residents set to be digitalised

By James Smith 3rd Mar 2022

Residents' free Kenilworth Castle passes will soon be digitalised after the town council approved plans to bring the permits "into the 21st century".

Residents have been given free entry to the castle for over half a century since it was given to Kenilworth Town Council by Cyril Siddeley, 2nd Baron Kenilworth.

KTC continues to administer residents' passes on paper forms, charging a £5 application fee.

But following a unanimous vote from members, the council's website will now be upgraded to allow applications to be made online rather than on the current paper forms.

And the council will also buy a card printing machine to issue passes.

Up to £300 will be spent upgrading the website and £1,200 on the card printer.

Speaking at Thursday's meeting Cllr James Kennedy said: "This will bring the castle passes into the 21st century from where they are currently in the early part of the 20th century.

"It will mean it much simplifies the process."

And Cllr Richard Dickson asked that the new design signpost residents to the council's new website.

"Can the Kenilworth website feature prominently in the design of the new council pass, so that people will see this and look on the website," he said.

No announcement was made about when this would start.
