Kenilworth coach becomes first visually impaired person in Britain to receive Brazilian Ju-Jitsu black belt
A coach who recently opened a new martial arts academy in Kenilworth has become the first visually impaired/blind Brazilian Ju-Jitsu (Bjj) black belt.
In an event hosted by Turbo MMA and CrossFit Time Keeper in Kenilworth, Steve 'Turbo' Turbitt received his belt, celebrating the massive achievement for the life long martial artist.
Steve, who helped open the gym earlier this year, is also the first Kenilworth person to receive the Bjj black belt.
He was presented with his belt by John Will, a member of the 'Dirty Dozen' - the first twelve non-Brazilian black belts - and a current sixth degree black belt.
John also delivered a two hour seminar for gym members and visitors.
Steve, who has competed for the British judo squad as a visually impaired competitor, and meddled for his country in international competitions, continued his martial arts journey by taking up Bjj.
"I feel like I have a lot to live up to," he said.
"It's a massive achievement of a lifetime of dedication to performance, martial arts and ju-jitsu.
"I am looking forward to passing on my knowledge and seeing my students achieve great things on the mats and in life.
Turbo MMA and CrossFit Time Keeper opened in April at the former Kenilworth Carpets showroom on Farmer Ward Road.
The gym was also visited by MP for Kenilworth and Southam Sir Jeremy Wright who was "put through my paces" by coaches Jack and Steve.
