Firefighters were called to a blaze in a field near Ryton Pools Country Park yesterday (August 14) started by someone burning a number of old kitchen units, trees and rubbish.

Three fire engines were called to the scene after an off duty firefighter had spotted the "huge plume of acrid black smoke" all the way from Leamington.

The fire was rapidly spreading towards a wood and nearby caravan park.

Crews remained on the scene after the fire was put out to make sure the area was safe.

Warwickshire Police's Rural Crime Team also spotted the blaze and said: "Strangely, no one made themselves known to officers for starting the fire."

A force spokesperson added: "What we found really was beyond belief.

"Someone had decided that in 34C heat yesterday, was the perfect time to burn a load of old kitchen units, trees and rubbish in the middle of a field!

"The fire was irresponsibly unattended and had already starting to spread across the open field towards the nearby woods and residential area."
