Crews were called to a fire that has destroyed the inside of a Kenilworth chip shop today (April 21).

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Friends Kenilworth on the corner of Queen's Road at 11.50am this morning after a fire broke out in the kitchen area of the shop.

Four fire engines, as well as police, were called to the scene.

The fire has destroyed much of the inside of the business, with some of the downstairs windows now smashed.

While the fire was being extinguished Warwick Road was closed, with cars being diverted along Waverley Road.

Warwick Road has now reopened.

Group manager Tom Crookson told Nub News at the scene that it was too early to say what had caused the fire.

The chip shop has been damped down but crews will return to the scene tonight to monitor the situation.

No injuries were reported.

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 11:49 am on Friday 21 April 2023 to reports of a house fire on the Warwick Road in Kenilworth.

"We had four appliances in attendance who, upon arrival, found a two-storey building approximately fiver-metre x 10-metre used as a fish shop and chip shop with a fire located in ground floor cooking and serving area.

"Crew quickly extinguished the fire and remain on the scene dampening down.

"Warwickshire Police attended the scene to assist with traffic management and neighbouring residents were evacuated from properties as a safety precaution."
