The final design for a new pedestrian crossing near the new Kenilworth School will be considered by councillors this week.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) will on Friday (July 14) discuss the final plans for a new toucan crossing on Dencer Drive, which forms part of a wider scheme to make sure pupils can safely walk and cycle to the new school on Glssshouse Lane.

The original proposals - which were advertised in February - would have seen traffic lights installed at the junction of Leyes Lane and Dencer Drive, with a pedestrian and cycle crossing included.

However, this was met with objections from residents.

"Objections and concerns were raised regarding the proposed traffic signal junction from members of the public so the traffic modelling and design was reviewed and amended," a council report said.

The updated scheme - which was then re-advertised - is for a toucan crossing on Dencer Drive near Leyes Lane. On either side of the crossing, a joint cycleway and footpath on the pavement would continue along Leyes Lane.

"Alternative crossings arrangements have been explored including the zebra crossing which would create more delays to general traffic and would not provide the same level of safety to school children and would not cater for cyclists," the report added.

"Therefore, a signal-controlled toucan crossing is the preferred solution."

The council said only four responses were received for the second consultation, with residents near the proposed crossing concerned about being able to access their properties during peak hours.

The council report said this was not a major concern.

A recent WCC report on the works along Glasshouse Lane said some of the safety measures - including the new crossing - will not be completed until after the new school opens this September.
