Many of the roadworks around the new Kenilworth School will not start until the autumn, the latest update by Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has confirmed.

The scheme - which will see new cycle lanes, toucan crossings and access roads built - began in April.

While WCC had already said some of the works would not be completed until after the school opens, it has now revealed that some of the works will not even start until then.

The new toucan crossing on Dencer Drive is not expected to be built until the autumn, and is dependant on the outcome of a recent consultation.

The portfolio holder will also have to consider the designs before they are signed off.

"The general layout of the proposed works for Kenilworth School originally included the signalisation of the Dencer Drive/Leyes Lane junction and a toucan crossing," the update said.

"Recent consultation on a revised design proposal for the Dencer Drive crossing has been completed."

A decision on the preferred design was expected this month, but has not been publicised yet.

Meanwhile the Leyes Lane footpath works will not start until some point this summer, and again will not be finished in time for the new school's opening. These works are also dependent on the weather.

A 20mph speed zone will also be created in front of the new Kenilworth School, with speed humps and cushions installed. This is the current focus of contractor CR Reynolds Ltd.

Footpath and cycle path works are complete on the west side of Glasshouse Lane.

"The highways works are on track for completion in mid-Autumn 2023 with the works on Glasshouse Lane and the school entrances completed for the start of a new term opening," the update added.

CR Reynolds is also working with Miller Homes and Vistry Homes to accommodate works also needed as part of the new housing estates being built on the road.

Completed works to date:

  • Glasshouse Lane Road widening, to provide a new right turn lane in to the school, is due to finish September 2023
  • Removal of the existing hedge and small trees on the east side of Glasshouse Lane, for the road widening and drainage works, commenced 14 June
  • Carriageway excavation for the road widening commenced 14 June
  • Drainage works for the road widening and storm water outfall from Miller Homes development to finish in July

The update says some elements of the scheme are already being delayed due to "everal unforeseen service connections" which need to be lowered.

The long-term works will include:

  • Construction of a separate access with right turn lane onto Glasshouse Lane.
  • Construction of new shared footways / cycleways along Glasshouse Lane, Leyes Lane and Dencer Drive.
  • Installation of two toucan (pedestrian and cycle) crossings on Glasshouse Lane.
  • Installation of a traffic signal junction at Dencer Drive / Leyes Lane with pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities.
  • Creation of a 20mph zone on Glasshouse Lane along the school frontage.
  • Raised humps and speed cushions on Glasshouse Lane along the school frontage.
  • No waiting restrictions on Dencer Drive and Leyes Lane to protect the new signals from indiscriminate parking.

All of the above works are being carried out under a S278 Agreement which has been signed between the developer, Kenilworth Multi Academy Trust and Warwickshire County Council.

Keep up to date with the works here.
