The family of a 73-year-old professor who died after a crash have paid tribute to him.

Professor Harry Matlay was taken to hospital following the collision at the Walsgrave Road junction with Grantham Street at just before 2pm on Friday (2 January).

The Warwick University Business School professor died early on Wednesday morning.

His family have paid tribute to him, saying: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of our father, Professor Harry Matlay, following a serious collision on Friday 2 January.

"He was greatly loved and admired by many, and his passing is a profound loss.

"He will be deeply missed by his children, family, friends, ex-colleagues and ex-students, around the world.

"We respectfully request privacy at this time."

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and is assisting officers with enquiries.

Det Sgt Richard Evans, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are offering support to Prof Matlay's family at this devastating time as we continue working to establish the exact circumstances of the collision."

Prof Matlay held posts at Birmingham City Business School and the University of the West of Scotland Business School.

"We would ask anyone who is yet to speak with us and was in the area at the time and may have seen what happened or has dashcam to get in contact," West Midlands Police said.

"Call 101 quoting log 2368 of 2 January, alternatively email officers at the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, at [email protected]."
