Facelift for Kenilworth's oldest pub as new signage plan submitted

Kenilworth's oldest pub could soon be given a facelift, with plans submitted for a series of new signs.
A planning application put forward by owner Everards said the Virgins & Castle is having some "minor" internal redecoration and needs to replace its current signs "due to their condition/age".
In its application to Warwick District Council, the brewery said the current signs "do not support the development" of the High Street pub.
"Overall, we have designed a new signage scheme based on the style and locations of the existing signage," the application said.
"The new decorations will enhance the appearance of the pub and the signs themselves will replicate the impact of the existing signs."
Said to date back to 1563, the Virgins & Castle is thought to be Kenilworth's oldest pub.
Last year it was given a new lease of life with new owners taking it over.
The application says the proposed new signs would preserve the history of the building.
It continued: "Whilst designing our proposed signage scheme, we were keenly aware of the history of this site and its prominence within the wider street scene.
"As a result, we opted to design a like for like scheme in terms of signage locations, with a darker redecoration colour to enhance the appearance of the site.
"We have tried to replicate the existing sign sizes where possible as the existing signs are scaled perfectly for the building to accommodate, without them becoming overbearing.
"Where we have positioned the lighting will allow the key architectural features of the building to be highlighted without dominating the street scene.
"Overall, we feel that our proposed scheme is sympathetic and will enhance/protect the building for many years to come."
