Following the death of HRH the Prince Philip on Friday (April 9), Warwick District Council has asked residents to only lay flowers of respect in one place in Kenilworth.

The council is asking that flowers are only placed at the Globe Hotel Memorial at Abbey End, as residents look to pay their respects to the prince this week.

However, in leading the district's tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh both the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Warwick District Council would like to encourage local people to make a donation to one of his Royal Highnesses' many patronages or charities in preference to laying flowers or other memorial items.

Cllr Martyn Ashford, The Chairman of Warwick District Council comments: "We understand that many of you will want to find a way to reflect and pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, however national restrictions continue to limit our ability to organise for gathering together in any of our public places.

"I shall be watching Saturday's (April 17) funeral from home and marking the one minutes' silence at 3pm with my thoughts for the Royal Family and all those in our district who have recently lost loved ones."

The council has also requested that residents do not leave flowers wrapped in paper or plastic and avoid leaving candles. Those placed outside of the designated areas will be moved to the official area, and then removed the day after the funeral to be composted, where possible.

Kenilworth Town Council has also opened a book of condolence for residents to sign in memory of the Duke of Edinburgh. More information can be found here.
