The dates for a week of free activities and events to celebrate Kenilworth's wildlife have been announced.

Aimed at children and families, the inaugural 'Kenilworth Naturewatch' will run between Saturday May 29 and Sunday June 6.

Starting with a 'Naturewatch' stall at the Open Day Market and a shop window competition on Saturday May 29, the activities include:

- A minibeast hunt

- Plant and flower surveys

- Moth and bat evening

- Forest encounter

- Tours of local nature reserves

- Photography and art competitions.

The week of events has been organised by Kenilworth Town Council's climate roadmap group. Events are to be run by local community groups and independent providers including Friends of Abbey Fields, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Bee-Friendly Kenilworth, Kenilworth Eco-Church Groups and Closer Look at Nature.

Kenilworth Naturewatch week coordinator Cllr Samantha Cooke said: "Since forming the climate change roadmap group, we have been thinking about ways to get people engaging more with the local area.

"While a lot of people have been exploring the local area more in the last 13 months, there is far more to our surroundings than we might think.

"This family focused week is designed to introduce those who take part to lots of new and exciting information about flowers, bugs and our fantastic outdoor spaces. We hope it is a fun week for everyone involved."

All activities will be free for participants but will require online sign ups.

Event registration will start to go live from Friday April 30.

Chair of the council's climate roadmap group Cllr John Dearing added: "Back in February, the town council's climate Roadmap group thought about what we could plan as a community activity in the summer.

"We eventually hit upon a Naturewatch week - a bit like Springwatch on TV and mainly aimed at families and children - who perhaps having been cooped up for too long will feel the need to immerse themselves in nature.

"Yes - we hope children will learn something about local nature and wildlife but more than that we hope they will enjoy themselves and have fun in the outdoors."

See the Kenilworth Naturewatch 2021 webpage for more details of the activities and schedule, and how to register.
