Crossing busy roads still an issue for safe cycling access to new Kenilworth School

The town council has called on its county colleagues to prioritise finding a solution for a number of busy roads across the town to make sure it is safe for children to cycle to the new Kenilworth School.

The £48 million Glasshouse Lane school is set to open its doors to pupils from September next year.

And a campaign to ensure there is safe cycle access to the site has already been started by teenage campaigners Isadora McAinsh and George Bell who presented a petition to Warwickshire County Council leader, Cllr Izzi Seccombe, earlier this year.

And updating Kenilworth Town Council members last week, cycle working group leader Cllr Andrew Milton said a meeting had been held between the school and local councillors.

"It was a useful meeting," he said.

"The school are clearly committed to want to help their pupils get to the school safely by active travel means, that's clear and they are happy to do what they can.

"However, there's not actually an awful lot that they can do beyond the last 100 yards.

"We have asked the county council to prioritise a number of key points in the town, particularly Warwick Road, Farmer Ward Road and Dalehouse Lane, where people would need to cross main routes, to try and make those safe."

The Pedal to Protect petition handed to Cllr Seccombe at the start of the year had nearly 2,000 signatures calling for better cycle provision to the school.

Speaking in February Isadora told councillors: "It is frustrating for the kids of Kenilworth who want to contribute to tackling carbon emissions but can't necessarily walk to the new school, and yet there is no safe cycleway.

"We need a cycleway that doesn't abruptly end or enters into fast traffic - until you provide this how can you change the culture of travelling to school?

"What is the point of providing 544 bike racks for the new building if you are not providing a way to get the bikes there?"
