Town councillors have been told £500,000 will be spent improving roads around Kenilworth by the end of the current financial year.

The news follows calls from local representatives to Warwickshire County Council (WCC) to do something about the town's "crumbling" roads.

Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) unanimously backed a letter to its county colleagues saying highways need improving now especially given the number of new houses being built in the town.

The council also asked how the £2.87 million grant it received for pothole repairs earlier this year will be spent in Kenilworth.

And updating members at last week's town council meeting, Cllr Richard Dickson discussed an update from WCC's portfolio holder for transport and planning Cllr Jan Matecki which said over 1,000 potholes across Warwickshire have been fixed since April.

"We asked how the extra Department for Transport funds would be spent in Kenilworth and there are a number of paragraphs [in the report] but you will see at the end that in this financial year - the one ending in March - the county council will spend an extra half a million pounds in Kenilworth to carry out carriageway resurfacing," Cllr Dickson said.

"That is good news.

"But I am not exactly sure where that is going to be spent."

KTC also called on the county council to coordinate roadworks more effectively to reduce the impact on Kenilworth's roads.

Cllr Dickson continued: "They have a system where they are meant to liaise with utilities and property developers, but our concern is that it doesn't seem to be working terribly effectively.

"At various times we have a utility supplier, then the next week it is the property developer.

"We have made the point and I think they are going to go away and find a better solution for it."

Cllr Dickson also planned works for Clinton Lane - which he said is in a "very poor state indeed" had been delayed until next year due to "operational issues" having meant to start in October.
