A Kenilworth councillor has asked for updates on a major piece of new employment land which has seen little movement since it was signed off four years ago.

When planning permission for the Kenilworth Gate housing estate - including 550 homes and a primary school - was approved for Leamington Road in 2021, the scheme also included a major piece of 'employment land'.

The area has since been marketed with the Warwick District Council working to find investors to bring the site forward.

A planning application to build six industrial buildings was submitted for the plot last November and is yet to be resolved.

And with little visible progress on the Thickthorn land, Cllr Andrew Milton last week asked for an update.

“It [the land] was allocated in the last local plan yet currently it remains undeveloped and that is a missed economic opportunity for our district,” he said at last week’s full council meeting.

“Could you provide an update on the status of the land and the plans for its development?”

In response portfolio holder for housing, Cllr Jessica Melrose, said: “There is a live planning application for the site and some outstanding queries that the applicant is dealing with.

“In terms of marketing, the council did try to market the site through the county council’s inward investment team to raise the profile.

“But overall the responsibility still rests with the promoter.

“I have spoken to the lead officer from our side, and if you would like to go into more detail they are happy to work with you and get in touch.”
