Town councillors have once again been left frustrated over a lack of joined-up thinking around road closures in Kenilworth.

Following two weekends of the A46 being closed for HS2 works, Kenilworth Road towards Coventry is now shut for a full month.

And at this week's full Kenilworth Town Council meeting, members expressed their frustration that this has coincided with traffic lights being installed on Dalehouse Lane making it difficult for drivers to head into town from the north.

Councillors will bring up the problems at next month's meeting with HS2 and its contractors BBV.

"Could we specifically probe them about how they are defining 'closed'," Cllr Andrew Milton said.

"There was at least one day this week where the road into Coventry was closed at Gibbett Hill and on Dalehouse Lane we had four-way traffic lights which were causing chaos. 

"One of the things we were trying to avoid - and have asked the county council to do - was make sure those roads are never 'closed' at the same time.

"I can imagine someone may try to weasel their way out of that and say it [Dalehouse Lane] wasn't technically closed - there were just four-way traffic lights. 

"But that obviously causes a lot of problems for people travelling in and out of town."

Councillors did not discuss the A46 weekend closures in much detail, after the first of the two weekends saw huge queues across the town centre.

Cllr Milton simply added: "I am not going to mention anything about the lights on the gyratory on one of the weekends where the A46 was closed - they were causing more trouble than the problems they were solving."

Dates for the three-week closure of the A46 this spring are yet to be confirmed.
