A Kenilworth scarecrow trail is set to return for the first time since 2019.

Run by the PTA at Thorns Community Infant School, the trail will see 26 Commonwealth Games-inspired scarecrows put up in front gardens across the town.

The trail, which has been cancelled since 2019 due to the pandemic, will run between June 25 and July 9.

Trail maps costs £2 and organisers are encouraging families from all the town's schools to get involved.

"It was going for four years before Covid and was a major event in the Thorns PTA calendar. It's a really nice, family activity to walk around the streets of Kenilworth, find different scarecrows and do the quiz to be in with a chance to win a prize," said event organiser Mark Langan.

"It is really exciting to have it back. In the past it was such a big event, especially for the kids from Thorns.

"It has always been a good thing to get out and do with the family, and enjoy the weather."

Maps are available online, and from local businesses including the Titlyard, Kenilworth Books, The Bakers Dozen, Steve Crowe Butchers and Haart.

Two competitions will also be run during the event.

Firstly, there will be letters at each scarecrow which will spell out a hidden message - anyone who completes the message will be entered into a prize draw.

And there will also be an award for the best scarecrow design - voted for by the public.

Explaining the theme, Mark added: "Obviously we have had a couple of years off with Covid but the PTA decided on The Commonwealth Games because it is just around the corner, and being hosted just down the road.

"We want to inspire kids to try new sports, to ask questions and learn more about what the Commonwealth Games is."

The event is also sponsored by a number of local businesses.

And with the money raised being used by the PTA to improve the learning of children at Thorns, Mark was quick to thank them for the support.

"We have a few sponsors - Julie Philpot, Sheldon Bosley Knight, Emmerson Press, Haart, Kenilworth Books, Lord Design Studio," he said.

"Having local businesses behind us is really important, it provides a massive boost to do the trail.
