The district council has said a "careful and measured approach" is needed before the new tennis courts are built in Abbey Fields.

Warwick District Council (WDC) is obliged to replace the courts which were used as a compound by developers while the new leisure centre was built.

The updated planning permission for the swimming pools included a condition stipulating the courts should be reinstated within three months of the facility being finished.

Now, three months after it reopened to the public, the council is yet to decide on a plan for the new tennis courts or the refreshed duck feeding platform.

One top councillor recently said the project is a "long way off".

An update is expected at next week's cabinet meeting, but the local authority has warned this will be a slow process.

"At their meeting on Thursday 22 October Warwick District Council's cabinet will be presented with a report recommending that a technical assessment is taken into bringing the tennis courts back into use on the scheduled monument site at Abbey Fields," a statement to local media said.

"In light of the site's historical significance, and the lessons learned from the redevelopment of the swimming pool, when the discovery of medieval remains added significant costs and delays, the council considers a careful and measured approach to this project to be prudent."

The council said it is "committed to keeping residents informed" and will provide a further update by the end of February.

Earlier this year, Nub News twice asked WDC for an update on the tennis courts and duck feeding platform, but did not receive a response on either occasion.

Further information about Abbey Fields will be made available on the local authority's website.

Updated planning permission for the leisure centre was agreed in 2021 after archaeological remains were found under the old pool.

When the new contracts for the pools' construction were approved, the tennis courts and duck feeding station were omitted due to the huge increase in costs for the project.

Kenilworth councillors have continued to press for answers on the delays over the past few months.
