New tennis courts in Abbey Fields are a "long way off" a senior councillor has revealed.

Locals in Kenilworth are still waiting for news on when the new courts and duck feeding platform on the town centre park will be built, following the completion of the new Abbey Fields Swimming Pools.

When planning permission was agreed - for the second time - for the new leisure centre in 2021, a condition was put in place stating the courts would be replaced and the feeding platform renovated within three months of the pools opening.

The tennis courts were used as a compound for the developers during the build.

However, three months after the leisure centre opened for the first time, a plan is yet to be completed for the works, let alone work starting.

When the new contracts for the pools' construction were approved, the tennis courts and duck feeding station were omitted due to the huge increase in costs for the project.

Prompted by a question at last week's Warwick District Council meeting by Cllr Richard Dickson, portfolio holder for safer, healthier and active communities, Cllr Jim Sinnott said progress was slow.

"I can't wait to see people in Abbey Fields playing tennis," he said.

"We are a long way off that.

"We made a commitment that they will be reinstated, that could be a tricky problem.

"There are lots of moving parts in that.

"You know what it is like digging in Abbey Fields, anything could happen and usually does.

"It could get very expensive and technical.

"But I want to get children and adults playing tennis in the park as soon as possible."

Portfolio holder for place, Cllr Chris King, added: "There will be a written report in three weeks."

He continued: "You will understand that we have to be very careful with how we proceed with anything in that area."
