The Kenilworth Lido Campaign has said it is becoming "increasingly frustrated" by the ongoing delays to the redevelopment of Abbey Fields Leisure Centre.

Whilst Warwick District Council is currently pressing ahead with the demolition of Castle Farm Recreation Centre, an announcement is yet to be made on the contracts for Kenilworth's second leisure facility.

The council said at the start of June that contract negotiations for the swimming pool redevelopment were "at their final stages".

But nearly two months later campaigners are calling on WDC to review its plans and "look at the more innovative, lower cost and lower carbon lido options".

The campaign group said the need for outdoor swimming was particularly apparent with more hot weather forecast and the school holidays just days away.

Campaign representative Ruth Colgan reiterated the group's willingness to contribute to funding a feasibility study for a modern lido in Abbey Fields, which could "undoubtedly be up and running much more quickly as construction time and building costs would be substantially reduced".

Responding to the calls for a rethink a WDC spokesperson said: "Warwick District Council is making significant progress with its plans to redevelop Abbey Fields Swimming Pool with a further announcement expected in the coming days.

"There have been delays to the timeline of the project while the council has been in negotiation with contractors to achieve the best value for money, amidst a background of rising building costs and supply chain issues.

"The council appreciates the patience of the public and looks forward to providing the people of Kenilworth with a wonderful new facility, meeting demand for an additional year round pool space, disabled access and a beautiful community setting to enjoy a range of water based activities.

"The old outdoor swimming pool will not be reopened."
