Burton Green road closure to stretch to seven months as HS2 work stalls
By James Smith 14th Jul 2026
The closure of a busy road in Burton Green is set to extend until the end of October, HS2 has confirmed.
The high speed rail developer has already confirmed it has started longer working hours at Cromwell Lane as works back up.
But now the road - which has been shut since April 7 - will remain closed until Sunday 31 October.
The new date adds an extra two months to the works, as Cromwell Lane was scheduled to reopen at the end of August.
The current closure is allowing gas, electricity, broadband, sewers and other services to be diverted so the road can be brought back to its original alignment.
HS2 has blamed the delay on "uncharted services" being discovered as well as "inaccuracies in asset owners' records" meaning more services had to be diverted.
Speaking to residents at an online meeting today, utilities project manager Shane Kerr said: "The complexity of the works has resulted in 20 design changes."
He continued: "Additional challenges; in order to meet the council's requirements to flood risk, there has been additional scope added to the drainage works which has meant the pipe size has been upsized.
"There are a lot more manholes than originally envisaged on the job.
"Another challenge was maintaining access to drives. We have tried to maintain access but every time we have to move plant and equipment, there is an impact on the programme and works. It adds up over time.
"To try and mitigate those delays, the team since the end of June, have been working additional backshifts during the week. The team has been working evenings and additional weekend shifts.
"Because of the thumbprint of the works area, it is very limited the number of people we can put on the site at any one time."
Current working times at Cromwell Lane are: Monday to Thursday 8am to 9pm, Friday to Sunday 8am to 6pm.
